Enough talk about public sector ‘respect’ - it’s time to tell Local Authorities where to get off. Plus politics and policy updates, and a smattering of Dolly Parton….
"there is just no money". I have to disagree with you here. The government creates money through the Bank of England. We are not short of money, we are short of taxes and Reeves refuses to tax those who can afford to pay. I keep hearing this mantra and I refuse to accept it.
I did hesitate before I said that Crhis, and I really swither. I think you're absolutely right - but the problem is that the right wing press and the international financial markets don't agree. I genuinely can't decide whether we say tough shit to them and do it, or be more cautious.... I changed that bit three times!! Do you know Richard J Murphy on Youtube? He is pretty straightforward about it, like you.
I follow Richard Murphy. He spoke this morning about how our national debt fell by £1.5 trillion after the government published its 2023 accounts. That makes the £20 billion black hole look like a missing brick in your garden wall. I get how we are obliged to live in an economic world of green skies and blugrass (shout out to Dolly on that one) but I was at Locality24 the other week and was surprised how uncritical of this government the stage was.
Yes I saw that too. The problem is he’s right but I’m not sure it matters! Re: locality, I think everyone was still just flooded with warm feelings that we aren’t being actively baited by Suella Braverman. But there are plenty of things to distrust Labour on…
So great to see your posts being so honest about the challenges in the sector
Thanks Sarah - somebody has to be!
